Project Brief: The "Storm Tower" at Tharwa Sea Front
Responding to the Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge
The "Storm Tower" is conceived as an iconic architectural sculpture for the Tharwa Sea Front, embodying the core aspirations of the Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge to transform public spaces, celebrate heritage, and inspire the future, in alignment with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030. Our proposal interprets "The Inspiration Around You" through a dynamic exploration of humanity's profound and evolving relationship with Time, Nature, and Technology.
Concept: A Monolith of Elemental Engagement
The "Storm Tower" is a multi-modal monument that harnesses and choreographs natural forces to create a contemplative and immersive experience. It symbolizes resilience, innovation, and the continuous dialogue between the built and natural environments. It transforms the abstract concepts of atmospheric phenomena, solar energy, and the relentless passage of time into a tangible, sensory journey.
Architectural Form & Materiality:
Rising approximately 60 feet (or taller), the tower's striking form evokes the elegant geometry of a cooling tower, functionally designed to drive a stack effect. Its exterior is thoughtfully articulated:
North Face: Clad in cool limestone or concrete, offering a serene, reflective surface that anchors the structure.
South Face: Features a dark, hybrid solar Photovoltaic (PV) and Thermal wall, a visible testament to the integration of advanced, sustainable technology.
East & West Faces: Adorned with living greenery and resilient mosses, visually connecting the structure to the vibrant natural world and acknowledging the coastal climate.
The Experiential Journey:
Approaching the "Storm Tower," visitors are drawn by its commanding presence. The entrance is intentionally unconventional, achieved not through a traditional portal but via a series of strategically placed wind screen walls. These screens meticulously control and funnel the coastal air, initiating a toroidal (donut-shaped) airflow pattern within the structure's inner volume. This creates an immersive passage, reminiscent of "sneaking into an industrial space through the machine itself," immediately engaging the senses.
Once inside, visitors find themselves in a spacious gallery, connected by elegantly designed stairs and catwalks that ascend three stories. The atmosphere within is constantly shifting:
Daytime: Beams of natural light penetrate the structure, appearing to "glance off" and be diffused by the dynamically churning inner air mass, creating a visual spectacle of air in motion.
Nighttime: The tower transforms into a beacon of subtle energy. Induced electromagnetic discharges manifest as gentle, glowing bands within the air, providing a mesmerizing display that evokes the silent power of a contained storm.
Harnessing Nature & Technology: The Cryo Pit:
At the apex of the tower lies the technological heart: a powered vortex tube system. This innovative system actively generates a stream of cold air that descends steadily into the main chamber, creating a stable, cool core within the tower. This core air stream continues its descent past the gallery, culminating in the "Cryo Pit" at the base.
Here, the tower's most profound interaction with nature and technology takes place. Sculptural, supercooled fin arrays are strategically placed within the Cryo Pit. Through precise temperature control and the manipulation of the coastal environment's inherent humidity, these fins grow delicate ice crystals on a daily cycle. This visible, tangible process underscores the tower's core themes:
Time: The daily growth and transient beauty of the crystals serve as a living clock, a poetic manifestation of the passage of time.
Nature: It highlights the unseen forces of humidity and temperature, making them visible and artistic.
Technology: It demonstrates humanity's capacity to understand, harness, and create beauty from complex natural phenomena.
Impact and Relevance to Saudi Arabia's Vision:
The "Storm Tower" stands as a testament to innovation and resilience. It serves as a striking landmark for the Tharwa Sea Front, enhancing its identity as a destination for cultural engagement and community gathering. By openly embracing advanced technology for environmental interaction and artistic expression, the tower aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's goals of diversification, fostering a knowledge-based economy, and redefining the Kingdom's global image. It invites contemplation on our place within the natural world, our capacity for technological advancement, and our enduring journey through time, rooted in the unique inspiration found in the Saudi environment.
