# INTERNAL SYSTEM AUDIT: THE 27-SENSE NIDRA

I would like to invite you to prepare your space to stand, sit, and lay in phases as you read or listen to this piece. We are undertaking an audit of our internal systems. I am presenting this as a Yoga Nidra but it can also be engaged with as a stress test or psychological meditation.

Please engage consciously and with kindness and generosity to yourself. I have chosen a Yoga Nidra style presentation because in my studies have found the scope too broad for one session and shallow experiential knowledge has been the least disorienting for me. May my words serve you well.

Please join me on the journey of deepening our understanding of being, sharing space and Self.

Many are taught the 5 senses, yogic tradition teaches 10, modern neuroscientific consensus is aligning around 33. Today we will investigate a curated sample that addresses the bulk of the observable and biomechanically explainable, before gently bringing us to the edge of the known. We will travel through 27 distinct meditations in which we will seek to explore about 32 senses. I aim for a 60 minute presentation and seek to leave the listener in a Theta Drop, I recommend this for those who consider themselves Skilled Intermediate and Advanced Yoga Nidra Practitioners. If you don't identify with those labels that is ok, just try half as hard to understand anything.

### THE ANCHOR

Before we begin in earnest I invite you to pick Scent, Sound, or Chronoception to be your Home Base Sense. If scent, anchor to a specific smell,  if sound, llisten to the quality and not the content of the sounds around you, or if chronoception, simply feel the gentle and steady tic of your own internal clock.

If at any point this process becomes frustrating, uncomfortable or overwhelming, please activate your home base sense, assert any necessary control of your space, and rejoin me as you desire. Please take a moment now to anchor into your home sense as you allow the names of the senses in this modality to wash over you:

Sight, Sound, Scent, Vomeronasal, Taste, Thermoception, Nociception, Mechanoreception, Pruriception, Proprioception, Vestibular, Tension & Stretch, Cardioception, Pulmonary, Gastric, Emetic, Thirst, Satiety, Excretory, Magnetoreception, Baroreception, Chemoreception, Immune, Circadian, Visceral Distension, Chronoception, Echolocation, Synesthesia, Agency, Ownership, Metacognition, Noetic.

Some of these senses may seem like strangers, but they have been quietly informing your whole life. Listen, feel into yourself. Simply be. Allow the novelty of this moment to fade into the steady hum of self knowledge. These gateways are here for you to explore again, when you have rested. Simply be.

## PHASE 1: THE EXTEROCEPTIVE GATEWAYS

(SIGHT, SOUND, SMELL, TASTE, TOUCH)

1. SOUND (AUDITION)

"Cast your awareness out like a net. Where is the furthest sound you can detect? Don't name it—just lean into the vibration. Is there a sound even further than that?"

"Now, find a sound inside this room. Perhaps the hum of a fan or the sound of your own breath. Confirm its presence. 'I am hearing this now.'"

"Can you hear the silence beneath the sound? Try to separate the sound from the space it occupies. Does the sound have a 'border,' or does it simply dissolve into you?"

"The sound and the listener are one. Rest in the vibration of the entire room as a single, unified field of frequency."

2. TOUCH (TACTITION)

"Scan for the lightest touch possible. The weight of a single hair on your forehead. The brush of air on your cheek."

"Feel the heavy pressure of your heels on the floor. Confirm the density. 'I am held by the earth.'"

"Can you feel the boundary where your skin ends and the air begins? Look for the exact millimeter of contact. Is it a hard line, or a fuzzy, buzzing frontier?"

"The body is not a container; it is a point of contact. Feel the whole surface of your skin as a single, glowing membrane of touch."

3. SCENT (OLFACTION)

"Inhale slowly. Is there a 'texture' to the air? Is it dry? Damp? Does it carry a ghost of a scent from another room?"

"Find one distinct note—the smell of the mat, your skin, or a nearby candle. Pinpoint it. 'This is the scent of the present moment.'"

"Can you smell the air before it enters your nostrils? Notice the tiny hairs in the nose catching individual molecules. Does the scent change as it warms inside your body?"

"The air you breathe is the world entering you. Scent is the bridge between the 'out there' and the 'in here.' Breathe and be bridged."

4. TASTE (GUSTATION)

"Bring your attention to the tongue. What is the current 'climate' of the mouth? Sweet, metallic, or neutral?"

"Notice the pooling of saliva or the dryness of the palate. Confirm the sensation. 'I am tasting the chemistry of my own body.'"

"Can you move the 'taste' to the back of the throat? Then to the tip of the tongue? Does the sensation intensify when you press the tongue against the roof of the mouth?"

"Let the sense of taste soften. You are nourished by the simple presence of your own life-force."

Allow yourself movement that seeks ultimate comfort. The sweetest pool of honey you can let your body pour into being. Build your nest, touch a totemic comfort item, take a potty break, and gather your blankets close as we begin to truly dive beneath the surface. Know this motivation to seek comfort is always freely available and supported by your Home Sense.

Some of these senses may seem like strangers, but they have been quietly informing your whole life. Listen, feel into yourself. Simply be. Allow the novelty of this moment to fade into the steady hum of self knowledge. These gateways are here for you to explore again, when you have rested. Simply be.

5. SIGHT (VISUALIZING THE DARK)

"With your eyes closed, look at the back of your eyelids. What is the 'color' of the darkness? Is it flat, or is there a subtle dance of light and shadow?"

"Notice any shapes or 'phosphenes'—those tiny sparks of light. Acknowledge them. 'I see the light within the dark.' We can recruit these dancing lights to intentionally hallucinate a deeper experience of Magnetoreception. We have the same mechanisms in our eyes that allow the birds to use this sense, we just have less need."

"Imagine you are already effortlessly in flight high over a lush landscape. Can you see the blue ribbons of electropotential differentials, like subtle aurora borealis, constantly orienting you in space? Maybe they are familiar, you have seen these before, while cloudwatching or gazing into an open sky. Every line indicates which way is home, and which way to go next. There is no resistance, no doing, just the perfectly referenced view of a beautiful earth below, and the vast twinkling galaxy above. Do you have to pick one to “look” at, or can you expand your sight to have a 360 degree view? What happens to the sense of 'self' when the gaze expands beyond the seen?"

"Visual awareness is not limited to the eyes. Feel yourself as a 'point of view,’ open and connected in every direction."

## PHASE 2: THE SOMATIC SENSES

(HEAT, COLD, PRESSURE, AND SIGNAL)

6. THERMOCEPTION (TEMPERATURE)

"Scan the landscape of your body for 'thermal islands.' Where is the heat concentrated? Are there distinct pockets of coolness?"

"Locate the warmth in the palms of your hands or the center of your chest. Confirm it. 'I feel this heat.' Now find the coolness of the air on your forehead, the tip of your nose. 'I feel myself radiating.'"

"Can you imagine the heat from your core flooding outward to your coldest extremities? Can you hold the sensation of 'hot' and 'cold' in your awareness at the same time without choosing one?"

"Temperature is simply the movement of energy. Feel yourself as a regulated system, balancing between the fire and the frost."

7. NOCICEPTION (THE SIGNAL/PAIN)

"Scan for any 'loud' signals in the body—an ache, a pinch, or a dull throb. Instead of labeling it 'pain,' look at it as a stream of raw data."

"Acknowledge the specific location of the sensation. Say aloud, 'I hear the signal.' Observe its shape—is it sharp, or does it have blurry edges?"

"Breathe directly into the center of the sensation. Does the signal change frequency when you acknowledge the message? When it is decoded? Does it move, or does it dissolve when it is finally 'heard'?"

"Release the resistance to the signal. You are the vast space in which these sensations arise and fall. You are the silence that contains the sound."

8. MECHANORECEPTION (DEEP PRESSURE)

"Notice where the body is most 'dense.' Where does the weight of your bones feel heaviest against the floor?"

"Feel the specific pressure on the back of the skull, the shoulder blades, and the sacrum. Confirm the contact. 'I am being held by gravity.'"

"Can you feel the floor 'pushing back' against you? Try to sense the equal and opposite force of the earth meeting your weight. Does the boundary of your back feel like a solid wall or can it become a permeable membrane?"

"Let the pressure become a hug. There is no effort required to stay here. You are supported by the fundamental laws of physics."

9. PRURICEPTION (THE SURFACE TINGLE/ITCH)

"Look for the tiny, electric sensations on the surface of the skin—a phantom itch, a tingle, or the feeling of a single hair moving."

"Find one specific point of 'static' on the skin. Without moving to scratch or soothe it, observe. 'This flicker is for me.'"

"See if you can 'will' the tingle to move an inch to the left. Watch the sensation peak and then inevitably fade away without any effort. Notice the impermanence of the itch."

"The skin is a glowing field of electricity. Rest in the subtle hum of the nervous system as it flickers like starlight across your entire body."

Some of these senses may seem like strangers, but they have been quietly informing your whole life. Listen, feel into yourself. Simply be. Allow the novelty of this moment to fade into the steady hum of self knowledge. These gateways are here for you to explore again, when you have rested. Simply be.

## PHASE 3: THE KINESTHETIC SENSES

(THE "MOVEMENT IN STILLNESS" GATEWAYS)

10. PROPRIOCEPTION (THE BODY MAP)

"Without moving, try to know the exact position of your pinky toes. How far are they from each other? From your elbows? Are they falling away from each other? Can you feel the distance between your left ear and your left shoulder?"

"Confirm the map. 'I know exactly where my body is in the dark.' Feel the 'outline' of your physical form as if it were drawn in light."

"Can you mentally 'shrink' your map? Imagine your body is only as large as a doll. Now, 'expand', go slow but don't stop when you feel your limbs stretching out to the edges of the room. Can you feel your own 'presence' in the corners of the ceiling?"

"The body map is fluid. You are not a fixed object, but a conscious presence that can expand or contract at will."

11. VESTIBULAR (THE GRAVITY SENSE)

"Even in total stillness, there is a sense of 'which way is up.' Close your eyes and feel the fluid in your inner ear. Do you feel centered, or is there a subtle sense of leaning?"

"Acknowledge the pull of the Earth. 'I am being pulled toward the center of the planet.' Feel the weight of your heavy bones sinking deeper into the floor."

"Imagine you are on a boat in calm seas. Feel gravity shift slightly as you breathe, as you balance. Now feel the waves grow. Notice how your internal sense of 'level' reacts. Now, imagine you are safe, free floating in zero gravity. Does the sense of 'self' feel lighter when the 'down' disappears?"

"You are always in relationship with the Earth's core. Rest in the profound stability of gravity. The planet is holding you."

12. TENSION & STRETCH (MUSCLE SPINDLES)

"Search for the 'length' of your muscles. Can you feel the subtle tension in the jaw? The stretch in the hamstrings? The coil of the pelvic floor?"

"Acknowledge one area of 'held' energy. Confirm it. 'I feel this tension.' Don't try to change it yet; just witness the 'readiness' of the muscle."

"Can you increase the tension by 1%? Just the tiniest engagement. Now, release by 10%. Feel the muscle fiber elongating like melting wax. Can you feel the 'rebound'—the softness that follows the release?"

"The body is a web of tension and release. Feel the entire muscular system softening into a state of 'effortless ease.' The 'will' to act can rest."

Some of these senses may seem like strangers, but they have been quietly informing your whole life. Listen, feel into yourself. Simply be. Allow the novelty of this moment to fade into the steady hum of self knowledge. These gateways are here for you to explore again, when you have rested. Simply be.

## PHASE 4: THE INTEROCEPTIVE SENSES

(THE VITAL RHYTHMS)

13. CARDIOCEPTION (THE HEART)

"Direct your internal ear toward the center of the chest. Can you detect the rhythm of the heart? Don't look for a sound—look for a 'thrum' or a subtle vibration in the chest, the throat, or the fingertips."

"Acknowledge the pulse. 'I am in rhythm.' Feel the mechanical reliability of this muscle that has not dropped it's beat since before you were born."

"As you breathe, notice if the heart rate slightly accelerates and smooth out. As you inhale, does it speed up? When you exhale, notice if it smooths out and slows down. Can you feel the 'echo' of the heartbeat in your belly? In your earlobes?"

"You are a pulsing field of circulation. Let the boundaries of the heart soften until the 'thump' is not just in your chest, but is the rhythm of the entire room."

14. PULMONARY SENSE (THE BREATH/CO2)

"Notice the urge to breathe. Not the breath itself, but the need for the breath. Where does the signal to inhale begin? Is it in the throat? The diaphragm? The blood?"

"Feel the expansion of the ribs. 'I am being breathed.' Confirm the cool air entering and the warm air leaving."

"At the bottom of your next exhale, pause for two seconds. Feel the 'air hunger' rise—the chemical signal of carbon dioxide. Don't panic; just feel it. Then, let the inhale in. Notice the profound relief of the cells as they receive oxygen."

"The breath is the tether between the conscious and the unconscious. Rest in the flow. There is nothing to try; the body knows exactly how much life it needs."

15. GASTRIC & VISCERAL SENSE (THE GUT)

"Drop your awareness beneath the ribs, into the soft space of the abdomen. What is the 'mood' of the gut? Is it heavy, hollow, buzzing, or still?"

"Acknowledge any gurgle, weight, or sensation of digestion. 'I feel my center.' This is your 'enteric nervous system'—your second, symbiotic brain."

"Imagine a warm, golden light resting on your navel. Does the gut soften in response to your attention? Can you feel the weight of your internal organs settling toward the spine as gravity pulls on them?"

"You are nourished. You are processing the world. Let the belly be completely soft, like a deep, still lake."

16. THIRST & SATIETY (THE CHEMICAL NEED)

"Check the moisture of the mouth and the back of the throat. Is there a signal of 'dryness' or a desire for water? Scan the body for the feeling of 'fullness' or 'emptiness.'"

"Acknowledge the state of your cells. 'I am satisfied' or 'I am seeking.' Confirm the signal without the need to fulfill."

"Imagine the sensation of a single drop of cool water hitting the back of your tongue. Notice how the body reacts to the thought of hydration. Does the throat swallow? Does the mouth water?"

"You are a vessel of fluid. Your cells are in constant communication with the environment. Rest in the wisdom of your body's requirements."

Some of these senses may seem like strangers, but they have been quietly informing your whole life. Listen, feel into yourself. Simply be. Allow the novelty of this moment to fade into the steady hum of self knowledge. These gateways are here for you to explore again, when you have rested. Simply be.

## PHASE 5: THE METABOLIC & REGULATORY SENSES

(THE CHEMICAL STREAMS)

17. BARORECEPTION (BLOOD PRESSURE & FLOW)

"Scan for the sensation of 'flow.' Can you feel the weight of your blood as it moves through the major highways—your neck, your inner thighs, your armpits? Notice the subtle pressure against the walls of your veins."

"Locate a place where the pulse is prominent. Acknowledge the internal pressure that keeps you upright and conscious. 'I feel the tide of my own life-force.'"

"Imagine your blood becoming warm and slightly viscous, like honey. Now imagine it light, effervescent, like sparkling water. Does the sensation of 'internal weight' change as you shift your mental focus?"

"You are a hydraulic system in equilibrium. Rest in the steady, rhythmic pressure of your existence. You are circulating."

18. CHEMORECEPTION (THE SPARK/OXYGENATION)

"Beyond the movement of the lungs, can you sense the 'brightness' of the blood? Look for a subtle tingle in the extremities—the feeling of oxygen actually meeting the cells. Like a quiet, internal shimmer."

"Acknowledge the feeling of 'freshness' right after a deep breath. 'I am receiving energy.' Confirm the chemical shift as the fuel enters your system."

"Visualize the oxygen as tiny sparks of blue light traveling to your toes. Then, visualize the carbon dioxide as a soft grey mist leaving. Feel the 'density' of the air change as it transforms within you."

"You are a continuous chemical reaction. Let go of the effort to 'breathe' and simply watch the alchemy of gas and blood performing itself."

19. IMMUNE SENSING (THE FRONTIER OF SELF)

"Scan for areas of 'heat' or 'defense'—a healing cut, a slight inflammation, or just the general 'hum' of your immune system. How does your body know what is 'you' and what is 'not you'?"

"Find a spot where you feel absolutely 'secure' in your skin. Create one if you need it. Acknowledge the silent army of cells protecting your boundaries. 'I am safe within myself.'"

"Imagine your white blood cells as a soft, protective glow surrounding not just every organ but your entire body. Can you make that glow slightly brighter? Feel the depth of security thicken. Notice if the body needs to shift or sink even deeper into the floor."

"You are an intelligent, self-correcting system. Trust the wisdom of your defenses. Rest in the peace of a body that knows itself."

20. CIRCADIAN SENSE (THE INTERNAL CLOCK)

"Beneath your closed eyelids, sense the time of day. Without checking a clock, feel the 'angle' of the sun and the readiness of your nervous system. Are you in an 'upward' cycle or a 'downward' cycle?"

"Acknowledge your current state of arousal—tired, wired, or neutral. 'I am here, in this specific moment of the day.' Confirm your place in the 24-hour rhythm."

"Now imagine it is 3:00 AM. The waning moon has just set. Feel the deep, heavy silence of the of the night. Now imagine the pre dawn blue begins to creep across the sky before the sudden burst of first light. Now imagine it is High Noon. Feel the peak of activity. Notice how your body's 'internal engine' tries to rev up or down based just on the thought."

"You are a child of the Earth's rotation. Your rhythms are synchronized with the cosmos. Drop into the timeless state where there is no schedule—only the eternal 'now'."

Some of these senses may seem like strangers, but they have been quietly informing your whole life. Listen, feel into yourself. Simply be. Allow the novelty of this moment to fade into the steady hum of self knowledge. These gateways are here for you to explore again, when you have rested. Simply be.

## PHASE 6: THE SUBTLE & META-SENSES

(THE USER INTERFACE OF THE SOUL)

21. VISCERAL DISTENSION (INTERNAL VOLUME)

"Sense the three-dimensional volume of your torso. Beyond the skin, how much space do your organs actually occupy? Feel the 'fullness' of your being."

"Take a deep breath and feel the lungs expand not just forward, but into the back ribs and down into the pelvic bowl. Acknowledge the internal pressure. 'I occupy this space.'"

"Imagine your internal organs are as light as clouds, floating in the vast space of your ribcage. Now, imagine them becoming heavy like stones. Notice if your sense of 'size' changes with the sense of weight."

"You are not a flat image; you are a voluminous, living container. Rest in the depth of your own internal architecture."

22. THE GATEWAYS OF RELEASE (EXCRETORY SENSE)

"Bring your attention to the very base of the torso—the pelvic floor. Scan for the subtle signals of 'holding' or 'readiness' in the bladder and bowel."

"Acknowledge the state of these systems. Confirm the quiet tension or the total ease. 'I am in control of my boundaries.'"

"Perform a 'micro-release'—a mental letting go of the pelvic floor without any physical movement. Can you feel the wave of relaxation travel from the root all the way up to the jaw?"

"Accept the wisdom of your body’s cycles of intake and elimination. Rest in the peace of a system that knows when to hold and when to let go."

23. CHRONOCEPTION (THE SENSE OF TIME)

"Without looking at a clock, sense the duration of this session so far. Does it feel like five minutes? An hour? Notice the 'texture' of time in this state."

"Acknowledge the rhythm of your heartbeat as your internal metronome. 'I am present in this moment of time.'"

"Try to 'stretch' the next five seconds. Imagine each millisecond is a vast canyon you are drifting through. Now, imagine the next minute passing in a single flash. Which feels more 'real'?"

"Time is a tool of the mind, but you are the master of the clock. Drop into the timeless state—the eternal 'Now' that exists behind the seconds."

24. ECHOLOCATION & SPATIAL MAPPING

"With your eyes closed, 'see' the room. Use the sounds bouncing and the currents of air pressure to map the distance to the ceiling. How far away is the door? How close is the wall behind your head?"

"Acknowledge your position in the room. 'I am the center of this space.' Feel the volume of the room as an extension of your own body."

"Imagine the walls of the room moving outward by ten feet. Then twenty. Feel your awareness expanding to fill the new space. Can you feel the 'presence' of the objects around you in the room without touching them?"

"Your senses are not confined by your skin. Your awareness is a field that permeates the entire environment. You are the space in which everything happens."

25. AGENCY (THE SENSE OF 'THE ACTOR')

"Locate the part of you that could move your right index finger right now. Don't move it—just find the 'spark' of the intention. Where does the 'will' live?"

"Confirm your power of choice. 'I am the author of my stillness.' Acknowledge that you are choosing, in every micro-second, to remain in this state."

"Send the command to move your leg, but 'cancel' the signal before it reaches the muscle. Feel the energy of the intent hit the 'brake.' Notice the ghost of the movement in the brain."

"You are the driver, not the passenger. Rest in the profound power of your own agency—the quiet 'Will' that directs your life."

26. OWNERSHIP (THE 'MINE' SENSE)

"Observe your limbs. Is there a sense of 'mine-ness' attached to your hands? Your breath? Your thoughts? How do you know this body belongs to you?"

"Claim your form. 'This is my vessel. This is my home.' Feel the intimate connection between your consciousness and this specific arrangement of matter."

"Try to look at your body as if it were a beautiful piece of biological-art you are simply observing. Now, snap back into full ownership. Notice the 'click' of identification."

"You are the steward of this miracle. Rest in the deep gratitude of the partnership between the spirit and the flesh."

27. SELF-AWARENESS (THE WITNESS)

"Finally, turn the flashlight of awareness back onto itself. Who is the one who has been sensing all the layers? Who is the 'I' behind the eyes?"

"Acknowledge the Witness. 'I am that, I am.' Not the thoughts, not the body, not the senses—but the one who observes."

"Try to find the 'edge' of your awareness. Does it have a border? Does it have a color? Can the observer be observed?"

"You are the vast, silent ocean. The senses are just ripples on the surface. Sink into the depths of pure, undivided being. You are Yourself."

### THE CLOSING

Gently, begin to gather these streams of data. Bring them back into the heart center. Use your home sense as a bridge between this deeper self and understanding. Smell the room, touch your fingers together, and feel the steady beating of your heart.
